Catching up with…Polar Explorer and Climate Change Champion Eric Larsen

Feb. 24th 2011

This last November SCARPA athlete and polar explorer Eric Larsen completed his Save the Poles expedition – and epic trip involving reaching both the North and South Pole and the summit of Mount Everest in a calendar year to raise awareness of Global Warming.

He placed himself in the some of the world’s most remote, and otherwise most inhospitable environments to show why they’re worth saving. Through his efforts he’s garnered attention on the world stage. Now, months after his journey, we got him to answer a few questions about what it means to realize a major life goal.

Q – You’ve successfully completed the expedition. You’ve been interviewed and celebrated in the media. Was it what you expected? Do you feel you drew the kind of attention you sought for regarding global warming?

EL – Honestly, I expected I would be able to promote more climate change initiatives—solutions to the problem of global warming. Instead I spend a lot of my time simply verifying that, yes, these places are indeed melting. I had substantial media coverage, but there is definitely more I can do. This story isn’t finished yet.

Big Mountain Telemark Skier, Martha Burley, on Switching to NTN Telemark System

Feb. 18th 2011

By Martha Burley

NTN stands for New Telemark Norm - an entirely new telemark binding system that also needs a matching new style of telemark boot – basically instead of turning at the toe one now can turn at the forefoot without twisting the boot or binding.  The NTN system has been around a few years now and I know a lot of people, and even shops, are still waiting to see how the new system will pan out -  and if its going to take over the world. Personally, I’m finally 100% committed, have taken the plunge and am stoked.

SCARPA’S Pebax Rnew AT and Tele boots, lower impact and higher performance

Feb. 10th 2011

Skiers are persnickety. We claim to be for the environment, but sometimes our quest for glory comes with a price. We want high performance tools of the trade, which are oftentimes at odds with environmental responsibility. Not to worry… in the case with some SCARPA ski boots, choosing high performance gear may also be the right call for the environment.

In 2009, SCARPA introduced its Planet Friendly program, which marked our most comprehensive effort at building footwear while minimizing our environmental impact.

From reducing carbon footprint, energy consumption,  or after-life impact, we are working with our suppliers to use materials and technologies to help us make footwear that really is lower-impact product.
