A Recap of the Michigan Ice Fest

Feb. 9th 2012

Ice festivals are a wonderful celebration of community, ice climbing, gear, talent and education. SCARPA was a proud sponsor of the Michigan Ice Fest, held in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore last weekend, February 3-5, 2012. Jon Jugenheimer of Ames Adventure Outfitters shared a brief recap with SCARPA:

A few days ago the Michigan Ice Fest was held in Munising, Michigan. Over three hundred people descended on the quiet town and invaded Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior to celebrate ice and climbing.

The winter has been a bit soft this year up in the UP and the ice was fickle, but there is so much ice to climb up this way that even in a low season there isn’t a problem to find any. You just may have to walk a bit further down the trail to find it, an ideal job for a great pair of boots.

SCARPA was a huge supporter of the fest again this year by bringing in bags of Demo boots to use on the ice. Two huge duffel bags of boots were used again this year as clinic participants and climbers looking to demo new gear took them out each day. One of the clinics was taught by Vince Anderson, a SCARPA athlete who touched on the finer points of ice climbing. Vince gave a great slideshow on Saturday night of him and Steve House climbing one of the largest walls in the world, alpine style. It was a great weekend of sampling some new gear, climbing ice along the Lake Superior shoreline and learning from the pros!

We would also like to thank Downwind Sports for hosting such a great event year after year! There is a great recap of what happened in case you missed it this year on the Downwind Sports blog. If ya did miss it, see ya next year, eh?!

SCARPA is also a sponsor of the 14th annual “Waterfall Ice” Festival in Cody Wyoming, February 17-20, 2012 . If you don’t live in the Midwest, come on out to Cody and check out some new boots there!
