The 2nd stop in the Triple Crown Bouldering series this Saturday at Horse Pens 40
SCARPA is a proud sponsor of the Southeast’s Triple Crown Bouldering Series. The series began in 2003 when Jim Horton created the series specifically to benefit the Southeast Climbers’ Coalition and the Carolina Climbers’ Coalition, two grassroots non-profits working to acquire and maintain land for climbers where access issues litter the countryside. The Triple Crown has since helped to highlight the incredible resources available to climbers in the Southeast and is increasingly drawing climbers from across the region and the entire US!
This coming Saturday (Nov. 6) is the second event of the three event series at the legendary boulder fields of Horse Pens 40 in Steele, Alabama. With a cap of 450 competitors HP40 has a large pool of world-class talent vying for glory. At the same time there are also beginner and intermediate classes, as well as the “Star Chaser”, wherein competitors rack up as many of the area classics as possible. There are several categories for entrants of all abilities and ages. The “Stonemaster 45”, is a co-ed division and was won by a woman its first three years.
The area is a natural bouldering playland with rippled, slabby hunks of sandstone offering steep, finger pad-eroding problems five feet from your car. “It’s like climbing on big brains,” says Horton. “There are lots of sloper problems.”
Participants can register for the entire series or single events. Everyone comes away from these events impressed with the event, the bouldering and the community. Definitely a worthy roadtrip if you’re looking for someplace to go.
