SCARPA F1 Evo: First Ski Boot to Earn Outside Magazine Gear of the Year

Sep. 17th 2014

From the start, we at SCARPA have been pretty excited about the F1 Evo. A ski boot that combines a featherweight 2.5 pounds per boot with a relatively stiff flex (95 flex index) and 62 degrees of cuff motion, the F1 Evo also offers a first in alpine-touring boot technology: a ski/walk mechanism that automatically locks and unlocks the cuff of the boot based on whether or not the boot is locked into the heel of the binding.

And it’s nice when others verify you were indeed on the right track.

This past week, the F1 Evo became the first ski boot to ever earn a Gear of the Year Award from Outside Magazine. That follows earning an Editors’ Choice Award from Backcountry Magazine a few weeks prior, and three other media awards, from Outside, Gear Junkie and Gear Institute, last January when the boot was first unveiled at the Outdoor Retailer show.

“Normally, we give the highest award in this category to a ski. But when the product that every tester can’t stop talking about is a boot, you listen,” Outside’s editors wrote when announcing the award.

Outside and Backcountry both heralded the hands-free Tronic ski/walk mechanism, and also praised how light and stiff the boot is, while being easy to use.

“The real kicker: It weighs less and skis better — both up and down — than many other boots in its class. Bravo, SCARPA,” Outside’s editors wrote.

Backcountry called the Tronic ski/walk mechanism “game changing. This could be the biggest development in AT boots, ever. Great ski mountaineering boot for the all-day tourer.”

The two newest awards follow on the heels of three other media awards given to the F1 Evo during this past January’s Outdoor Retailer show, where the boot was first debuted to retailers. Those included Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Show Award, Gear Junkie’s Best in Show Award, and Gear Institute’s Best New Gear Award, all accolades that call out the most groundbreaking new gear at the OR show.

Read on to see all of the F1 Evo’s awards and get excited for the snow to fly.
