Guidebook Writing With Martin Volken

Feb. 11th 2014

Martin Volken is one of only three officially IFMGA-certified Swiss guides working in the U.S. He has an instructor and examiner for the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) elite certification and the founder of Pro Guiding Services. Martin muses on writing a book, after recently publishing Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Routes – Washington.

She said, “You should just write a guidebook about the Washington Cascades.” Here is my first piece of advice: Be suspicious of any advice that starts out with “you should just.”

Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest on the horizon

Jan. 17th 2011

The Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest–Nelson, B.C.’s annual celebration of backcountry ski culture–takes place February 25-28 at the Whitewater Ski Resort outside of Nelson. The three day festival is packed with every excuse to get on snow, including skill clinics, competitions, and ski celebrations. And it’s all done in true Nelson style, which is to say that fun in and on the mountains is at the heart of everything.

Speaking of fun, backcountry skiing and Nelson…as part of SCARPA’s Coldsmoke sponsorship, we’re hosting the SCARPA Poker Run on Sunday the 28th.
