NTN telemark bindings: less than meets the eye

Nov. 17th 2011
NTN BindingRottefella’s NTN telemark binding, the New Telemark Norm system, has changed the way we look at telemark skiing. NTN arguably has usurped the traditional boot/binding interface of a cable binding for superior power transfer, better edge hold, release-ability, and step-in efficiency. These are all good things.

However, NTN has also gotten a rap among some skiers for the perception that it’s heavier and has a higher price tag.

But, like anything, you have a to look at all the information.

Big Mountain Telemark Skier, Martha Burley, on Switching to NTN Telemark System

Feb. 18th 2011

By Martha Burley

NTN stands for New Telemark Norm - an entirely new telemark binding system that also needs a matching new style of telemark boot – basically instead of turning at the toe one now can turn at the forefoot without twisting the boot or binding.  The NTN system has been around a few years now and I know a lot of people, and even shops, are still waiting to see how the new system will pan out -  and if its going to take over the world. Personally, I’m finally 100% committed, have taken the plunge and am stoked.

World Cup Telemark Racing with U.S. Team’s Knee-Dropping Diva, Lorin Paley

Jan. 5th 2011

Lorin Paley is fast out of the gate. The former Alpine ski racer turned Telemarker, Paley found the love of drop-knee glory when a former alpine skiing race coach recommended Telemark for her cross training. She never looked back.

The SCARPA-sponsored athlete began racing in the World Cup in 07-08, and has since has become the most decorated woman in Telemark racing. In addition to winning two junior World Cup Golds and a Silver, she’s claimed two silver and two bronze on the World Cup circuit, and has her eyes set on the gold. Did we mention she’s only eighteen?

Rottefella NTN tour dates announced – ya gotta try it to believe it

Nov. 12th 2010

If you’ve been wanting to give Rottefella’s innovative NTN telemark binding a try, check out the tour dates below. Rottefella with Telemark Skier Magazine will be conducting a tour this winter to spread the stoke and give folks the opportunity to experience the revolution of skiing tele without a cable.

If you don’t know what NTN  is, it’s a new binding and boot interface that radically improves the power transfer from boot to ski for telemark skiing. Instead of attaching the boot to the ski via a ‘duckbill’-style 75 mm toe, as do all other telemark bindings, the NTN binding clasps the boot underfoot with opposing force. The interface connects to the boot via two separate points, at the front of the boot (much like a traditional alpine skiing binding) as well as under the boot just beneath the arch via a second heel. Because it connects at two points, and in a more secure way, NTN delivers unparalleled performance.

But we hear ya. Ya gotta try to believe. So now’s your chance (or soon anyway).

Head to anyone of the demo events below and look for the demo tent. Telemark Skier Editor Josh Madsen, who’s helping manage the tour, will be present at all events. Along with raffling off an NTN binding at each event, they’ll have
