Focusing on the Sharp End: Q&A with climber and filmmaker Chuck Fryberger

May. 3rd 2011

SCARPA-sponsored climber and accomplished filmmaker Chuck Fryberger can often be seen through the lens—from both sides.  Striking a balance between climbing and art has been his bag for over a decade. And he does it well.

Climbing and filming have taken him around the world in search of stone and story. He’s produced several full-length climbing films, twice been the cover boy for Climbing, and rounds out the experience with musical documentaries and commercial film work.

We tracked him down during a film shoot to find out how Chuck keeps things in focus.

SCARPA Gecko Guide field review by Jim Donini

Apr. 28th 2011

Jim Donini (via Wikipedia) – (born 1943, Philadelphia, PA) is an American rock climber and alpinist, noted for a long history of cutting-edge climbs in Alaska and Patagonia. He was president of the American Alpine Club from 2006 to 2009, and a 1999 recipient of the AAC’s Robert and Miriam Underhill Award.

“I’ve done a lot of trekking into remote, nearly inaccessible, places – make that about 50 years’ worth. Scree, glacial moraines, temperate rain forest, sandy desert washes, river crossings and even the occasional maintained trail or two. Your pack is important and so is your clothing but nothing is the game changer your footwear can be – for better or worse.

Lumpy Ridge Adopt-a-Crag Event

Sep. 30th 2010

SCARPA North America is always psyched to support its partners and their projects, but we get especially stoked when a project goes down around our stomping grounds, like the event planned for this weekend supporting Front Range climbing, just outside of our hometown of Boulder, Colo. The Access Fund, a SCARPA partner, runs a program called Adopt-a-Crag, and October 1-3, the action continues at Lumpy Ridge in Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes, Colo. The event is hosted by the Front Range Section of the American Alpine Club and will be open to the public.
