Moving with Purpose: Max Taam is Ascending his Upward Arc

Sep. 10th 2013

Max Taam is a lung man. The New York transplant has set up roots is Aspen where he works as a ski patroller and spends most of his free time running, cycling, and skiing uphill. Last season the SCARPA athlete won two major skimo races, and finished 10th in the Teams Race with John Gaston at the Ski Mountaineering World Championships in France (highest American finish in history), and finished the season ranking second in the US behind John Gaston. We caught him just before he left for France, where he’s beginning a long bike trek through the Alps to continue giving those lungs a good stretch.

Team Crested Butte and the Growth of Ski Mountaineering

Apr. 25th 2013

SCARPA/Ski Trab-sponsored Team Crested Butte is an elite adventure ski team that trains in Crested Butte, Colorado and competes around the globe in various disciplines such as ski mountaineering (skimo), classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing. Practicing what they preach, “live to ski and play hard,” heed their warning: Don’t put your skis away yet, spring ski mountaineering is some of the best touring of the year.

In the 10 years Team Crested Butte’s been around, we’ve experienced a transformation from an elite adventure racing team to an elite ski mountaineering team. Heck, some of us don’t even tele ski any more.

Up the Ante: The Powder Keg Backcountry Ski Race’s new Triple Crown

Feb. 26th 2013

In two weeks Brighton Ski Resort will host the 11th annual Powder Keg, a backcountry race fest of speed, strength and endurance. Racers from all over the Wasatch will descend on Brighton for a weekend of uphill ski running glory. With Race, Rec and Heavy Metal (think Volant Spatulas with 1st generation Fritschis) divisions, backcountry types of all creeds are welcome to participate or cheer on their favorite competitors.

New this year is a Triple Crown, three-race format, beginning with a sprint race on Friday, the main event on Saturday, and a technical team race on Sunday. With three full days of sweat, spandex and skin glue, it’s the biggest event of its kind in the US. Race organizer Chad Brackelsberg believes the race has earned the extension. “It’s becoming more European, where some races consist of multi-day events.”
