It’s no secret that freedom comes with responsibility. And SCARPA has risen to the task with their new Freedom SL, an all-mountain, hard-charging freeride ski boot that combines strength and efficiency in one complete package. Designed with input from big mountain ski pioneer Chris Davenport, SCARPA’s Freedom SL boots were developed with alpine stiffness, superior range of cuff motion and weight, and an innovative DIN/Tech fitting sole system. Already the boots have won several awards from Ski, Skiing, Freeskier, Powder, and Backcountry, and the number is growing.
Matching the downhill chops of a worthy alpine boot with the capable ergonomics of a solid AT boot, the 120 flex index Freedom SL sets a high standard by giving skiers what a real freeride boot should do: the freedom to choose. Whether you spend the majority of your days lapping a resort’s challenging runs, finding powdered glory just past the gates, or setting sights deep in the backcountry, the Freedom SL gives you the choice of not having to choose. Wrap your head around that.
Two pivotal attributes of the Freedom SL are the lower-volume overlap construction and a Ride Power Block walk mechanism. SCARPA’s overlap construction is built to guarantee a gap-free connection with the lower leg and instep. This provides enhanced leverage and a superior power transmission. Using an Intuition™ tongue style liner, this snug, but ergonomic fit provides top notch downhill performance, but also reduces the chance of blisters due to unnecessary friction from heel slip or toe slide when skinning or bootpacking.
Speaking of walking, when released, the specifically designed Ride Power Block walk mode assures a completely friction-free motion, and at the same time increases the cuff range of motion to a vast 27 degrees – breaking trail has never been more fun. When locked, it works in concert with the V-Frame Power Ribs, which provide considerable strength for downhill performance, offering the best back support and augmented power transmission.
The essence of the Freedom SL comes from the marrow of its bones – SCARPA’s Carbon Core technology – a technique that over-injects the boot’s lower shell around a carbon fiber core. This improves stiffness and power to the ski without adding unnecessary material and bulk resulting in a boot that weighs 7 lbs, 14 oz per pair (size 27), providing an enviable strength to weight capability.
With increased edge to edge precision, the higher cuff can better hold its own with the rigors of resort based skiing, including hard pack, icy groomers, and played out powder bowls. They also allow you the freedom to take them deeper into the backcountry, where wild snow can include breakable crusts, slop, variable conditions, and refrozen coral. Eat it up!
Women, please take notice, as the best gifts in life are often the smallest. That’s why SCARPA sized the Freedom SL as low as 21.5 shell size, complete with a women’s specific last, for the best possible fit. It’ll be yet another reason why your boyfriend can’t keep up.
