VertFest 2013: a Festival of Freeride and Mountain Mettle

Feb. 14th 2013

Is cabin fever gettin’ you down? Then break out of your slump and keep the winter stoke going by heading to Alpental, Washington for the 7th annual Vertfest, sponsored in part by SCARPA North America.

Vertfest will take place this coming Saturday and Sunday, February 16 & 17. This mid-winter celebration is packed full of clinics, seminars, music, prizes and racing to get any mountain addict’s juices flowing. Vertfest starts off with the Monika Johnson Memorial Rally, a grueling race up to the summit of Alpental and back down, not only once, but twice, amounting to 4,500 vertical feet. This race is open to any and all participants with four separate divisions: race, recreational, 50+ and splitboarding. After the race, test your beacon skills against the best at the Mammut Beacon Contest for a chance to win big. Regardless of the results, everyone wins at the after party and awards ceremony with live jams by Head Like a Kite, an abundance of raffle prizes and plenty of beer. All participants will feel like number one.

With the dawn of the second day, it’s time to enrich your mind and shred some Northwest pow. Numerous clinics and seminars are offered that feature professional athletes to guide and give you the most up-to-date and practical skills, taking your backcountry skiing and riding to the next level. Classes offered span a wide range and include steep skiing, split boarding techniques, ski mountaineering, avalanche observations and landscape photography. With so many cool clinics, you’ll have to take your time and choose wisely. Be sure to check out  “Advanced Ski Mountaineering – How to go from the sidecountry to Mt. Rainier” with SCARPA athlete Jason Dorais as they show you ski crampons, rope work and anchor techniques to attempt classics like Mt. Rainier and the Grand Teton.
