When world-renowned boulderer Alex Puccio hits the IFSC Bouldering World Cup Circuit in April in Chongqing, China, she’ll be doing it in SCARPA rock shoes.
A friend first introduced her to SCARPA shoes while climbing in Europe, suggesting the rock shoes would be a good match for her style. “I really liked that SCARPA’s a family-owned company,” said Puccio. “I just have a really great vibe all around.”
Puccio is a seven-time national women’s champion in the American Bouldering Series and has earned top-five results each of the last three years on the Bouldering World Cup Circuit. In addition, she won the women’s bouldering competition at the Arco Rock Master event in Italy in 2012 and 2013, and she topped the field at the World Cup bouldering competition in Vail in 2009.
Outside of the competition scene, Puccio is equally as inspired by outdoor climbing and teaching others to enjoy the sport. In the off-season from competition, she focuses on bouldering outdoors, which she says balances out her climbing and gives her a fresh perspective on the comp scene. And not only has Puccio has climbed 14 V12s, but she also is a lead instructor at the renowned ABC Climbing Kids Climbing program in her hometown of Boulder, Colo.
Puccio, 24, has been climbing for 11 years. Her family got her into climbing when she was 13. Her mother, who is a climbing coach in Dallas, where she grew up, encouraged her to try the sport, and she remains a source of inspiration and support.
“My mom is my number one fan,” she said. “When I’m competing in Europe, she’s up at 3 in the morning to watch the competitions on the computer.”
SCARPA is excited to welcome her to the family. Keep an eye out for Alex this spring, climbing her new shoes.
